Is Astral Projection Real? An Honest Answer

It depends what you are asking, and the two possible questions have different answers.

Is the experience real? Yes, unambiguously. People genuinely have it, it is common, it can be induced deliberately in a laboratory, and the brain regions involved are partly mapped.

Does something actually leave the body? That has never been demonstrated, despite more than a century of attempts.

Almost everything written on this subject answers one of those and quietly implies it settled the other. This page tries to keep them apart.

What is not in dispute

The experience is well documented and more common than most people expect. Surveys have consistently found that somewhere around 5-10% of people report at least one out-of-body experience in their lifetime, and the figure is higher among people who meditate, who have had surgery, or who experience sleep paralysis.

The reports are also strikingly consistent. Across cultures and decades people describe the same sequence and the same features - the vibrations, the immobility, the sense of separation, the vividness. Consistency is not proof of an external cause, but it does mean people are describing something specific rather than inventing freely.

It can be produced in a laboratory

This is the part that changed the conversation, and it cuts both ways.

In 2002, Olaf Blanke and colleagues reported in Nature that electrically stimulating the right angular gyrus in a patient being assessed for epilepsy surgery repeatedly produced the sensation of leaving her body and seeing it from above. In 2007, Henrik Ehrsson induced comparable illusions in healthy volunteers using head-mounted displays and conflicting touch and vision.

What this establishes is significant: the full experience of being outside your body can be generated by interfering with how the brain models your location. It is a real, reproducible perceptual state.

What it does not establish is that this is all that ever happens. “The brain can produce this” is not the same as “this is only ever the brain” - a distinction that sceptical accounts sometimes skip past.

What has never been shown

The decisive test is easy to state. Someone reports something from their out-of-body vantage point that they could not possibly have known otherwise - a number on a high shelf, an object in another room.

Attempts have been made since the early twentieth century. No replicable positive result exists.

  • Charles Tart’s 1968 study of a subject called “Miss Z”, who reportedly read a five-digit number placed out of sight, is still the most-cited case. Single subject, acknowledged control weaknesses, never replicated.
  • Sam Parnia’s AWARE studies placed visual targets in hospital resuscitation areas. They documented that people do report structured experiences during cardiac arrest - a real finding - but produced essentially no verified perception of the targets.

A century of sincere, detailed reports and no verified information transfer is a meaningful result. It is not proof of impossibility, but it is the single most important fact in the debate and it points one way.

Why this is hard to settle

Three reasons worth understanding.

The experience is self-authenticating. People describe it as more real than waking life, which is why first-person certainty is high and why it persuades almost nobody else. Vividness is a property of the experience, not evidence about its cause.

False awakenings reproduce the room convincingly. “The bedroom looked exactly right” is the most common piece of evidence people offer, and it is weak - reconstructing your bedroom accurately is precisely what a false awakening does well.

Negative results are unglamorous. Nobody publicises a projection attempt where the target was not read. The visible record is heavily weighted toward the striking cases.

Where the honest answer lands

  • Documented: the experience exists, is common, and can be induced by stimulating the temporoparietal junction or by multisensory conflict. It clusters around states where the body-model receives poor input - sleep transitions, anaesthesia, extreme fatigue, cardiac arrest.
  • Well-supported: that it is a disturbance in the brain’s model of self-location. This explains the timing, the triggers and the content, and makes predictions that hold.
  • Reported: everything else. Travel, encounters, other locations. Sincere, consistent, unverified.
  • Not established: that consciousness leaves the body.

The reasonable position is neither “it’s proven” nor “it’s nonsense”. It is: something real happens, we partly understand the mechanism, and the extraordinary claim attached to it has not been supported.

If that feels unsatisfying, it is worth noticing that it is more interesting than either confident answer. A reproducible experience of being outside your own body is a genuinely strange fact about human consciousness regardless of what causes it.

What about the personal accounts?

They deserve better treatment than either side usually gives them.

Dismissing them as lies is wrong - the reports are overwhelmingly sincere, and many come from people with no interest in the subject who found the experience unsettling rather than gratifying.

Treating them as data about the external world is also wrong, because that is not what personal reports can establish, however honest.

The defensible reading: these are accurate reports of what someone experienced, and experiences are not self-interpreting. Someone can be entirely truthful about what happened to them and still be mistaken about what caused it.

Do scientists believe in astral projection?
Most researchers who study it regard it as a neurological phenomenon. A minority take the survival hypothesis seriously. Neither position is unanimous or unreasonable.

If it is just the brain, why does it feel so real?
Because “feeling real” is itself produced by the brain’s model. When the model places you outside your body, that is what real feels like from the inside.
